Dear Cathedral Family,
The Church's sacred mission is to bring Christ to all, especially to those who need him most. That mission belongs to every baptized person and, in a special way, to those whom God calls to missionary service.
In 2019, the Basilica of the Assumption launched Source of All Hope, a program for young adult lay missionaries who bring Christ to the homeless, addicted, and impoverished people of Baltimore City. Now, in response to an ever-increasing need to bring Christ to our youth, the Cathedral of Mary Our Queen is partnering with the Archdiocese of Baltimore's Institute for Evangelization and the Basilica to create a sister missionary program to Source, dedicated to youth outreach: Gift of All Truth.
Gift of All Truth will build long-term relationships in our parishes and schools, as teams of missionaries travel throughout the Archdiocese offering retreats, presentations, and events for students, youth groups, Confirmation candidates, and the like. God's plan of salvation, the dignity of the human person, and the universal call to holiness will be the truth they proclaim by word and example.
Gift and Source missionaries will share a common life, thanks to a facilities-lease agreement granted by the Archdiocese to both programs, on the campus of St. Thomas Aquinas in Hampden. There, they will live, pray, and be formed humanly, spiritually, intellectually, and pastorally to serve the Church as faithful disciples of Christ now and in their lives ahead. Based on the life of each co-cathedral, however, Gift missionaries will be active members of the Cathedral parish, as Source missionaries are of the Basilica.
While Source will move to St. Thomas Aquinas this summer, it will take a bit more time to fully build, promote, and recruit missionaries for the Gift program. We anticipate formally launching Gift of All Truth in the summer of 2024; however, anyone interested in participating should reach out about how to get involved now. Follow along at giftofalltruth.org for updates as the program develops.
As you know, the Seek the City to Come initiative is currently evaluating the Church's ministry in Baltimore City in view of restructuring and consolidating parishes in the next several years. We do not know what the landscape of the City will look like on the other side; however, in the meantime, St. Thomas Aquinas parish needs leadership to carry it through. The Dominican friar who has administered the parish for the past couple of years will be reassigned this summer, and his Order will not be replacing him. Thus, Archbishop William E. Lori has appointed Fr. Bianco as Administrator and Fr. Gough as Associate Pastor of St. Thomas Aquinas, in addition to our current assignments to the Cathedral, effective July 1, 2023. Our presence at St. Thomas Aquinas will not only ensure that the sacramental life of the parish continues and also that the missionary programs will be securely established in their new home.
As we take on this new responsibility, we assure you of our complete commitment to the Cathedral parish and school and will do everything we are able to be present and engaged in the lives of all those we have been asked to serve. Please join us in praying for St. Thomas Aquinas parish in this time of transition, for our Cathedral and Basilica, and for Source of All Hope and Gift of All Truth, that the light Christ would be brightly visible through us all.
May God bless you.
Fr. Louis A. Bianco, Rector
Fr. Justin Gough, Associate Pastor
